Dental Braces: Types & How Much Do They Cost

You might think you’re the only one with ugly and/or misaligned, but you couldn’t be further from the truth. If you believe this, I’d like to tell you this: almost everybody has issues with their teeth. One has a big gap between their front teeth, the other has an overbite and another person has crooked teeth. Most people aren’t happy with their teeth, so please know you shouldn’t feel like you have to do something about them. That said, I can imagine that the feeling of having ‘ugly teeth’ hasn’t gone away and that you want to do something about those crooked teeth. That’s what dental braces were invented for!

Common Causes
I can imagine it’s a big decision and once you have chosen to do it, they are so many factors you should read into. Think of: what kind of dental braces do I need, how long do You have to wear them, and most important, what does it cost & is there a chance I’m insured for this. Common problems for both adults and children that may lead to wearing braces are:

  • Cross bite
  • Overbite
  • Crowding
  • Spacing issues
  • Protrusion
  • Dental midline misalignment

Cost of Dental Braces
It’s important to know that, how longer you wait with wearing braces, the harder and more expensive it becomes. Most dentists recommend wearing braces as soon as the diagnosis is made and to complete the entire treatment. Pausing in between may cause the entire treatment plan to have to be redone. Which automatically means it only gets more expensive. Do know that the price of dental prices depends on the following things:

  • Age
  • Insurance & coverage
  • Period of treatment
  • Type of dental brace
  • Diagnosis

No matter how old you are, dental braces work for everyone no matter the age or gender – except for people who waited too long, and it’s better to operate on or people wearing dentures or dental implants of course. On average, you will have to walk around with braces for 2 to 3 years, but this can also vary. Teenagers will not need to wear braces as long as adults, and people with a less severe diagnosis may only need to wear them for a year. As you read in the list above, there are different types of braces. What types there are, and what the difference.is and what the different types cost, you can read all on the next page.

Metal Braces
The first and most commonly picked option in the metal dental brace. Metal braces are fixed to your teeth with brackets, bands and wire. This type is recommended for invasive treatments. In some cases, headgear is needed, but don’t worry, usually you only have to wear it at night. The cost of metal braces varies between $3000 and $8000 USD.

Ceramic Braces
The teeth-straightening process is almost the same as with metal bracket braces, but these are made of ceramic and look different. These braces are designed to be less visible, they’re usually transparent or white. This sounds positive, but unfortunately this kind of braces break faster than metal braces and are more expensive.

Invisible Braces
This kind of braces is almost invisible and is only recommended to teenagers and (young)adults. They are custom-made to your mouth, fit over your teeth to keep them in the right place, and must be regularly replaced by the orthodontist. A big pro is that they are invisible, but the process takes way longer than the abovementioned option. Invisible braces cost between $3000 and $8500 USD.

Lingual Braces
This is another invisible option, where the brace is placed on the back of your teeth (lingual). It almost the same as metal bracket braces, but they are on the other side of your teeth. Unfortunately, braces like these are not made for everyone. They are expensive and very difficult to maintain. They cost between $5000 and $13000 USD and the process take longer than ceramic or metal braces.

As you can see, it’s hard to tell you what dental braces really cost, as we don’t know all the factors. It’s important, in these kinds of invasive procedures, to thoroughly research and consult with specialists.
